Wexford Opera House takes 2nd place in Public Choice Vote of RIAI - design Award

(Monday June 22, 2009)  Wexford Opera House came a very respectable 2nd place in the Public Choice Awards in the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland Design Awards (RIAI), with the re-development of Thomond Park taking the top spot.

For the 1st time in its 21 year history the RIAI invited the Irish public  to have their say in the selection of the prestigious design awards, for which there were over 200 entries.   Wexford Opera House was among 35 shortlisted to go forward for the “Public Choice Award” and the Jury Award, to be announced at a special ceremony this evening in Dublin.

The €33 million landmark building was constructed over two years and completed on time and on budget.  Wexford Opera House now serves as home for the annual Wexford Festival Opera, as well as running a year round programme of theatre, dance, concerts and other events.

Designed and project managed by the Office of Public Works, in association with Keith Williams & Associates Architects. The Wexford Opera House comprises of a main auditorium, the John and Aileen O’Reilly Theatre, seating up to 855 people and a second, highly flexible space, the Jerome Hynes Theatre, named in memory of the Festival’s inspirational former Chief Executive, with a seating capacity of 172.
