Wexford participated for the first time in the Culture Night Evening happening across the country. Wexford Opera House and Wexford Festival Opera were only too delighted to be a part of what is hoped will be an annual event. Hundreds of culturally thirsty Wexfordians gathered in the foyer of Wexford Opera House to take in a brief but amazing concert with four of this years’ rising opera stars.
People packed all levels of the Opera House and lined-up along the staircases to get a sneak-preview of some of the talent appearing in the 58th Wexford Festival Opera. Turkish Soprano Pervin Chakar and Welsh Tenor, Adriano Graziani performed the ‘Libiamo’ duet from Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’. Canadian Mezzo Krisztina Szabo and Italian Baritone Marco Caria joined the pair to perform ‘Bella figlia dell'amore’, quartet from ‘Rigoletto’, also by Verdi.
Assistant Artistic Director of Wexford Festival Opera, Rosetta Cucchi, accompanied the quartet on piano, as well as introducing the programme to the enthusiastic crowd. Although Rosetta invited people to sing along – people were so taken by the performers that they were obviously contented to listen.
Later that evening, crowds gathered on the far-side of Wexford Bridge to await the illuminating of Wexford Opera House in the public art installation – ‘Liquid Mountain’. At approximately 10:45 pm, Wexford Opera House ‘appeared’ for the first time in Wexford’s Night time skyline, in an ever changing melody of colour. Wexford Opera House will be lit every evening from dusk to midnight – in case you missed it. As for another chance to hear the quartet of singers, tickets for the operas are nearly completely sold-out, however, you might get the chance to see them and other singers in ‘The Postcard’ events that were recently added to the festival calendar.
